Beef Stroganoff

One of the restaurants we used to frequent in Katipunan is Martha's Kitchen. It was a small, homey cafe that had only a few tables and an open kitchen. We always ordered beef stroganoff. We would watch the guy cook the beef, add the sauce, and add powdered cheese (yes, the frighteningly orange powdered kind), add string beans, pour it over rice, and serve us the most yummy stroganoff we have ever tasted! We were devastated when upon one visit, we found the stored closed with no mention whatsoever of where they were moving to. We were beyond sad when we realized that we would never be able to taste the cheap, yummy stroganoff again!

Mike has been requesting stroganoff for quite some time now, so I finally tried to make it once again. Without Martha's Kitchen's signature powdered cheese of course! Haha!

To make this yourself, you'll need:
beef, tenderloin tips
garlic, minced
onion, minced
sliced mushrooms
salt and pepper
worcestershire sauce
tomato paste
bay leaf
sour cream
dijon mustard

Melt the butter and saute the garlic and onions. Add the mushrooms and season with salt and pepper. Add the bay leaf and cover and let cook until the mushrooms are tender. Add the beef and let brown. Quickly add a bit flour diluted in a bit of water. Add a dash of worcestershire sauce, and tomato puree and sour cream to taste. You can start with a table spoon then add more until you like how it tastes. Add thyme, let simmer for a bit, then add cooked pasta.

You can substitute rice for pasta if you want!

Just remember to add the ingredients bit by bit so you can easily adjust the flavors to your liking. I'm quite heavy handed when it comes to the sour cream :) Yum!
